Carraghersaid the Liverpoolplayers didn’t expectFernando Torres to hit the ground running andthey were surprised that the Spaniard didn’t take time to settle into a new league. Fernando Torres was able to establish himself as one of the best strikers in world football at the end of his first season as a Liverpool player.

Torres announced himself to the Liverpool fans by finding the back of the net against Chelsea shortly after his transfer from Spain and he went on to get 33 goals for the Reds in his debut season. He capped his first campaign as a Liverpool player by leading Spain to the Euro 2008 title.

Fernando Torres scored the only goal in the final of the tournament as Spain beat Germany to win a major trophy for the first time in over four decades. Spain were known as perennial underachievers before Euro 2008 with their last win at a major tournament coming at Euro ’64.

The win at Euro 2008 started the Spanish dominance of world football. Spain was at the top of world football for over five years. Spain added the title at the 2010 FIFA World Cup tournament in South Africa courtesy the win over the Netherlands. Barcelona legend wrote his name in the history books when he got the only goal in extra time as Spain beat the Netherlands 1-0 to win the World Cup title for the first time.

Spain won three successive major tournaments including Euro 2012 which was sealed with the heavy 4-0 defeat of Italy.
