Morata Fights Off The Ghost Of Torres Against Leicester

Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata was able to fight off the ghost of Fernando Torres as the Blues cruised to victory against the Foxes at the Kings Power Stadium. The former Real Madrid man was yet to score any goal this year and his recent performances could pass for a regular performance by the struggling former Blues man Torres.

Many have hounded Coach Antonio Conte for releasing former striker Diego Costa, who was known for bullying opposition defenders. Morata has been quite the opposite, going down at the slightest challenge so much that referees rarely come to his aid, but rather they punish him for dissent.

Atletico Madrid forward Fernando Torres says he would not stop fighting for a spot at the club. He says after putting in serious effort to get a stable shirt in the team, he would not throw in the towel now.

The former Chelsea player admits that he knows any game he plays could be his last at Atletico but that he takes each game one after the other. Torres, in an interview with AS, said he was not gifted anything since he arrived at his boyhood club.

Fernando Torres is happy that his former clubs are set to return to the Champions League this season.

The Spaniard was a cult hero and captain from an early age at his current club Atletico Madrid before he agreed to join Liverpool.

Torres was a major hit for The Reds, netting 30 goals in his first term in England. The prolific goalscorer then decided to move to rivals Chelsea for a record fee. However, he did not enjoy as much success. He left on a good note as he played a part in the Champions League win of 2012.

The player moved back to his boyhood club two seasons back and he has been enjoying his career so far. With Chelsea and Liverpool set to return to the Champions League, the player has been wishing them well.

Following the CL draw where Chelsea, Atletico, AS Roma and Qarabag were grouped. Torres sent a message to Chelsea fans as he might be returning to play against them.

“Back at Stamford Bridge for the UEFA Champions League. So happy to see the Blues back at the competition. See you soon Chelsea,” he posted online.

Torres on Liverpool title chances

Former Liverpool striker Fernando Torres believes that Liverpool is on the right track and that they are edging closer to their first Premier League title.

Torres played for the Anfield side from 2007 to 2011 and said that this was an exciting moment of his career. He said that they come close to winning the Premier League in a couple of occasions and unfortunately could not make it to the end.

He said that he still follows the Liverpool team whenever he has time and that he feels that they are progressing well under Jurgen Klopp. He said that the German manager is an experienced manager and that he is the right person to bring the title back to Liverpool. You just have to see his enthusiasm on the touchline to know that he is someone that wants to win trophies and that he will bring this energy into the team.

Torres said that they have done quite well last season and that he feels that the team will get better this season. He said that they are still in the close seasons and that there is no doubt that the transfer committee is working on getting some new players in the side.

Fernando Torres explains why he disappointed in Chelsea

For a price tag of £50 million, Chelsea was able to secure the services of Fernando Torres as the Spanish attacker joined the Premier League club on January of 2011.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, their investment did not pay off as Torres failed to make appearances that are comparable to his transfer fee.

At that point in time, Fernando Torres became the 6th most expensive footballer in the history of the sport and expectations were high for him to prove his worth.

During his 1st season as a player of Chelsea, Torres made 14 Premier League appearances and he only managed to score 1 goal. His following seasons were fairly better but nothing that he did was memorable except for the UEFA Champions League goal that he scored against Barcelona on April 24 of 2012 which edged the victory for Chelsea and they ultimately went on to win the prestigious European competition.

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has waded into arguments about who was the better striker between Luis Suarez and Steven Gerrard whilst both players were at Anfield.

Gerrard says that Uruguay international Suarez had more impact than Torres.

“Torres and Suarez were the two strikers I loved setting up. Both different and both unplayable. Suarez has more about his game and can do more than Torres. But they’re both deadly,” Gerrard said.

The Barcelona hitman moved to Anfield four days after the Spaniard agreed to move to Stamford Bridge in the winter window in 2011. Therefore, Suarez could not line up with the former Reds star. However, he went on to cement his name in the books of the club, scoring 69 goals in 110 Premier League appearances.

Fernando Torres believes his ex-club, Liverpool conveyed him as a “traitor” following his departure to Chelsea in 2011.

The world cup winner, who became the fans’ choice at Anfield after scoring 65 goals in 102 league appearances for the club, signed for Chelsea in January 2011 for a then-British transfer record of £50m.

Despite the fact that he enjoyed huge personal success in his first three seasons at Liverpool, Torres became worried at the path the club was touring as a potential takeover loomed and sought to have talks with managing director Christian Purslow in the summer of 2010.

Before his departure, he was curious to know if the financial position of the club would be able to survive. However, with some key players beginning to leave, and following the sale of Javier Mascherano to Barcelona soon afterwards, he was left quite frustrated.

Torres pleased with Atletico Madrid

Fernando Torres has stated that he is pleased with the way Atletico Madrid is playing at the moment.

He said that every player is doing their best on the pitch and he hopes that this good run will continue for as long as possible.

Atletico Madrid is unbeaten in both La Liga as well as the Champions League and Fernando Torres believes that this run will continue for quite some time. He said that it is a privilege for Atletico Madrid to be in this position and that he knows that Bayern will be a tough competitor. He said that the objective of Atletico Madrid is to finish top of their group and for that, it is important that they beat the smaller sides.

He said that Bayern would drop only a few points in their group and it is important that they remain consistent if they want to finish at the top of their group.

He said that it is imperative that they collect maximum points before facing Bayern in Germany as it will be a tough game there. He said that Atletico Madrid would want to build on their good run at the moment to make sure that they qualify before their final group game.

Torres on Liverpool

Fernando Torres said that Liverpool made him pay for their own mistakes.

He said that he had no intention to leave Liverpool, but it is the club’s failing strategy that made him leave for Chelsea. He said that he settled well at Anfield and wanted to continue playing there, but the club had other intentions.

Torres said at the beginning the Liverpool management told him that players such as him would not be sold as they wanted to build the value of the team. However, this is not what happened because Javier Mascherano was sold to Barcelona. He said that Liverpool at that time was saying something and doing another thing.

Fernando Torres said that things became worst when the club was taken over by the Fenway Sports Group. He stated that the club replaced Roy Hodgson with Kenny Dalglish, and they appointed a football strategist.

He said that with the new owners came new strategy. He stated that the Fenway Sports Group wanted to sell the older players and build a team with younger players. At that time Torres stated that he was 27 years old and that he could not afford to wait for 5-10 years for the team to be successful. He said that there was no way for the team to be successful in the short run and this is what prompted him to move away from the club.

Fernando Torres has congratulated his Atletico Madrid team mate Antoine Griezmann for winning the two top awards at the just concluded Euro 2016 tournament.

Griezmann was impressive at the tournament, leading his country France to the final before they lost to Portugal in the final few minutes of the second half of extra time football.

Griezmann won the Golden Boot, after scoring twice as much as any player at the tournament with his six goal tally. The 25-year old player entered the tournament somewhat exhausted after his busy season for his club where he played at the UEFA Champions League final aside being among the top scorers in the La Liga where they finished third behind Barcelona and Real Madrid.

The Los Colchoneros player was awarded the best player of the tournament by the UEFA technical committee after the mundial despite losing it as hosts. Torres took to his Instagram page to pass across his best wishes, having won the same award himself back in 2012 when he netted three times and when Spain lifted their second successive Euro title.
